What is it like being in between?

Today, I’m thinking about what it would possibly be like in between Jesus death and His resurrection.

Lets go back and put ourselves in the disciples shoes.

Here we are, at a point where the Savior which we believed with all of our hearts that He had come to save us all and restore us all. We would have been sitting on thrones in a few years time ruling with Him because we were His disciples and He was our King. (You have to understand that his is before they have become fully aware of the things of the spirit and were still relying on the tangible rather than the intangible).

Our hope, the one we trusted and depended on with everything is now dead. If we were in Peter’s shoes, the guilt and shame would be worse because the last thing we did to Him was deny Him.

The big talk of “I’ll go to the grave with you” will now be playing in your mind with words like, “You little coward”, “such a chicken” or “what and idiot you are saying things you don’t mean, hypocrite!”.

So here you are sitting around the table, hiding from the authorities, having all this playing in your head.

I bet there wasn’t much conversation going on in the room. If there were, some of the topics I can think of would be, “What just happened?”, “Was any of this even real?”, “How could we have been so stupid?”, “What do we do now?” or “How do we get out of this mess?”.

Imagine that, walking with God, putting your trust, your hope, your future… your entire life in Him.

Then He dies, and everything that was in Him felt like it died with Him. It is all gone now… lost in time and space.

Can you relate? Remember the time when you decided to trust in God and for some reason He didn’t come through? He “died” or “went silent” or was nowhere to be found, and you’re sitting in your room, in your car or in a park, disappointed, hurt and stunned by what just happened, trying your very best to figure something out and to get out of this. I know I can.

The joy of this significant part in the history of human existence is that there is tomorrow. Now in hindsight, let me tell you that there is tomorrow, and tomorrow and the days after will be brighter than it is today.

Tomorrow, we see an empty tomb, tomorrow, He is alive again, tomorrow, He meets us by the road, tomorrow, He walks through that wall and greets us, tomorrow, He comes through and you know He is good for it.

So can I say to you, don’t be discouraged, don’t loose hope, don’t let go, for there is tomorrow.

This took place more than 2000 years ago but the story repeats itself in the lives of people all over the world. The characters might have change and the situations might be different but the condition of the heart and the outcome of the story remains the same. Just hold on and wait for tomorrow, you WILL see Him again and He comes with everything He has promised.

Don’t get disappointed with Him, don’t loose hope, don’t give up or give in, don’t loose trust… the shock will fade away quicker than you realize. He is good and is not out to get you or teach you a lesson. He is doing something, we just don’t see the way He does.

Have hope, it will help you get through the day.

Father, I pray for those who need hope today to carry them through to tomorrow. Let their eyes be focused on you and remind them Holy Spirit of the promises spoken over their lives. I know You are good and everything is for their good, even if they don’t understand it. I speak hope into each person reading this in Jesus name. Amen.

Call on Jesus, even if you don’t know who He is, He knows who you are. You can talk to Him like you would anyone, He listens and He is anxiously waiting for you to talk to Him.

Jeremiah 17:7-10

⁷ “But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.

⁸ He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?

¹⁰ “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind,
to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.”

Two things I automatically pull out from this passage is that those who trust in God will be always be fruitful, no matter the season. It reminds me of the new testament story where Jesus goes to a fig tree looking for fruit when it wasn’t in season and upon not finding any curses the tree and the next day its found dead. Speaks volumes to me about season and fruit that I’m bearing during the out season. We always blame the season, the busy season, the festive season, the holiday season but no matter what season we are in, we are called to bear fruit and we will if we trust and put our confidence in the Lord. Not by our works but just by putting our trust and confidence in the Lord. That isn’t so tough now is it? The Bible doesn’t say, “Go on a mission trip”, “spend at least 3 days a week doing ministry”, nor does it say “take time out from your schedule to meet someone”. All these are necessary and we act upon the prompting of the Holy Spirit and out of obediance but the point I’m trying to make here is that, whatever situation we’re in, whatever the ‘season’, we MUST bear fruit and to be honest, this (me writing this out) is me bearing fruit from my time with God despite the busy schedule. A simple encouragement to someone is ‘bearing fruit’, bring joy to a person’s day is ‘bearing fruit’… for the fruits of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

The second thing, is that it is very hard to help a deceived heart. ESPECIALLY if it is your own. But I thank God for the Holy Spirit that sheds light on every situation, every cross road, every deceiving thought and shows the true matter of the heart. The thing I cannot see for myself and that I’m so caught up believing, He comes and reveals the truth. Though a timely process at times because of the layer upon layers that need to be peeled back first, I still thank God that his grace is sufficient for me and that through Him, once blind, I now see. Such AMAZING grace! Thank you Jesus.

We ignore Him everyday of our lives. We laugh at His very name. We scoff at those who follow Him.

And yet, He is arguably the most important man who ever lived. A man who has had more impact on the world than any other before, or after Him.

There has been more written, composed, sung and created about Jesus Christ than any other figure in history. No one has left a legacy greater than His, yet He never wrote a book or travelled that far in the short period of time that He lived. He was a penniless man from Nazareth.

In today’s age we have more science, technology, media, entertainment and distraction than ever before - and yet the importance of the Gospel has never been superceded. There are now more Christians in the world today than ever in it’s history and it is still growing as more and more people around the world hear of the Good News and accept it.

He is the very center of history itself. He is that important.

Luke 10:33-34 ‘But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.’

Some sage has remarked that, “Between tomorrow’s dream and yesterday’s regret is today’s opportunity.” People who seize opportunities become God’s visionaries. God is searching the earth for people who can make decisions for themselves based on the opportunities around them right now. Mother Theresa taught that, “Jesus comes thinly disguised in the poor of the world.” And Martin Luther King made this observation: “Life’s most urgent and persistent question is this - what are you doing for others?” Something is wrong: We go to church where we will pray, “Lord, show me your will for my life.” To get there we will pass hospitals filled with lonely people, prisons bursting at the seams with forgotten and angry men, homes where single mums battle to hold a home together and others where the cries of the kids can’t be heard over the screams of their parents. Why don’t we stop long enough to find the will of God at the side of the road?
